Anglican Women Gather in NYC

Women from throughout the Anglican Communion will attend the 60th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women on March 14-24 in New York City.

Church delegates will attend the UNCSW meetings as observers on the floor of the United Nations and will represent the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion in their advocacy, including joint advocacy with Ecumenical Women. They will report on the UNCSW meetings during debriefings, speak about Episcopal Church and Ecumenical Women priorities with United Nations entities and permanent mission representatives, attend parallel events, and reflect on how they can share the knowledge at home.

These events are scheduled during the U.N. gathering:

  • The Episcopal Church will host an opening Eucharist on March 14 in the Chapel of Christ the Lord in the Episcopal Church Center, as well as a closing Eucharist on March 24 during which the Rev. Margaret Rose will celebrate and the Rev. Carey Chirico will serve as deacon. Both services will begin at 12:10 p.m. (EDT) and will incorporate stories, songs, and experiences of the delegates.
  • Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will welcome participants during a “Meet and Greet” in the Chapel of Christ the Lord (3-4 p.m. March 17).
  • A UNCSW Eucharist for participants, Episcopal Church Center staff, and the public will feature Presiding Bishop Curry as the preacher and the Most Rev. Josiah Atkins Idowu-Fearon, secretary general of the Anglican Communion, as the celebrant (5-6 p.m. March 17).
  • The Chapel of Christ the Lord will offer the Holy Eucharist at 12:10 pm. each weekday.
  • Episcopal Relief & Development will sponsor a parallel event, “Engaging Faith Communities in the Fight to End Violence Against Women and Girls,” in the Chapel of Christ the Lord (6:30-7:30 p.m. March 15). It will host a parallel event at the Church Center for the United Nations.
  • Anglican Women’s Empowerment will host a Lunch & Learn event featuring Elizabeth Boe, the Episcopal Church’s global networking officer (1-2:30 p.m. March 15). It will host a parallel event at the Church Center for the United Nations.
  • The Anglican Communion will host two events in the Chapel of Christ the Lord: speaker Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini (10-11:30 a.m. March 16) and Archbishop Idowu-Fearon (2-3:30 p.m. March 16). The Anglican Communion will host a parallel event at the Church Center for the United Nations.
  • St. George’s Episcopal Church in Fredericksburg, Virginia, will send a group of young adults and their parents to UNCSW. St. George’s will write and lead the prayers of the people for the UNCSW Opening Eucharist on March 14.

Episcopalians will organize many other UNCSW parallel events and worship opportunities through the Diocese of New York, including the Church of the Epiphany, Church of the Incarnation, the Global Women’s Fund and Holy Trinity Manhattan. Julia Ayala Harris of the Diocese of Oklahoma, a member of Executive Council, will be the provincial delegate representing the Episcopal Church to the Anglican Communion delegation.
