A priest from the Diocese of Virginia is the Diocese of El Salvador’s first U.S.-based canon for international relations. The Rev. Bernie Schroeder was installed in the position July 15 at Iglesias San Juan Evangelista (Church of St. John, the Evangelist) in San Salvador.

The Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnston, Bishop of Virginia, approved the appointment in June.

“Father Bernie has been a good friend to the Diocese and people of El Salvador and I am pleased that he is a canon from our diocese in the United States,” said the Rev. David Alvarado, Bishop of El Salvador. “We look forward to a long and fruitful relationship.”

Schroeder will assist Bishop Alvarado by representing the Diocese of El Salvador before the U.S. government and with dioceses in the United States.

Schroeder has made several trips to El Salvador and has served as liaison officer between the Diocese of El Salvador and the Diocese of Virginia since early 2014.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to serve my good friend, Bishop Alvarado, and the people of his diocese, in this important way,” Schroeder said. “My love for the people of El Salvador and my prayer for peace there is unbounded.”
