A fund has been launched on YouCaring.com to support the children of Tom Palermo. As of the early afternoon on December 31, the fund stood at $16,776 of its $25,000 goal (hat tip: Episcopal Café).

In a pastoral message, the Diocese of Maryland has encouraged participation in a memorial ride honoring the memory of bicyclist Tom Palermo:

Community ride to remember and celebrate the life of Tom Palermo

Thursday, Jan. 1, 2015, 3:30 p.m.

Beginning at Bishop Square Park, northwest corner of N. Charles Street and University Parkway

While many are experiencing anger and grief in this time of loss, the memorial ride is held to peacefully remember Mr. Palermo. We are sharing this information from Bikemore and Bike Maryland and encourage you to attend and stand in solidarity with and grieve with the cycling community of Baltimore.

In a recent press release, the cycling organizations announced,

“Please join friends of Tom Palermo for a memorial bike ride on Thursday, January 1st, 2015. For those riding, please meet at 3:30pm at Bishop Square Park on the northwest corner of the intersection of Charles and University, adjacent from the Cathedral of the Incarnation.

“After a moment of silence for Tom, we will bike to the scene of the crash at 5700 Roland Avenue to place a white memorial bicycle in honor of Tom. Friends and members of the community who are not riding bicycles are welcome to join us at this location.”

Diocesan staff have been in contact with memorial-ride planners, who want to encourage clergy and church members to join the cycling community in remembering Mr. Palermo.

We, too, are all filled with questions for which there are still no answers, and we are all filled with anger, bitterness, pain and tears. Our thoughts and prayers right now are with Mr. Palermo, his family and friends, and the bicycling community.

If you want to participate

The Episcopal clergy serving the Roland Park and surrounding neighborhoods invite clergy and their parishioners to be a pastoral presence for the riders in the New Year’s Day Memorial Bike Ride honoring the life of Mr. Palermo.

Participating clergy and parishioners are asked to bring a candle and stand along the bike route in these three designated spots as riders pass by. Clergy are encouraged to wear black clericals. Please, no church banners.
