General Hires 2 Teachers

Michael Battle
General Theological Seminary has appointed the Very Rev. Michael Battle, as the Herbert Thompson Professor of Church and Society. He will also assume the position of director of the Desmond Tutu Center.

Battle holds a unique connection to the Desmond Tutu Center, having lived in residence with Archbishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa for two years (1993-94) and being ordained a priest in South Africa by Archbishop Tutu in 1993.

He also presented the 2008 Paddock Lectures in the Tutu Center at General Seminary on the concept of Ubuntu, an African concept central to Archbishop Tutu’s worldview.

Battle most recently served as interim dean of students and community life at Episcopal Divinity School.

Battle received his undergraduate degree from Duke University, and holds an MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary and an STM from Yale University. He completed a PhD in theology and ethics from Duke University.

Battle will begin his new position at General in the fall, will teach ethics, and will lead the Graduate Anglican Seminar, as well as intensive courses that will be offered, for credit or audit, through the Desmond Tutu Center.

Kevin John Moroney
General Theological Seminary has announced that the Rev. Kevin John Moroney will teach liturgics as an affiliate faculty member beginning in the fall. Moroney has close ties to General and comes highly recommended from faculty and community members.

Moroney is a graduate of General Seminary (MDiv ’92) and received his PhD in liturgy from Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Dublin in 2008. He is rector of Christ Church, Ithan, in Villanova, Pennsylvania, and serves as an adjunct professor at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. He taught liturgics at the Church of Ireland Theological College in Dublin (2000-05) and is the author of many published papers on the topic.

With the departure of Prof. Patrick Malloy to assume his new position at St. John’s Cathedral, Denver, General Seminary begins its search for a new full-time professor of liturgics. During this time, Moroney will teach the core liturgy class as well as a liturgical practicum in the chapel.
