Christ Church Cathedral plans to establish the Bishop John E. Hines Center for Spirituality & Prayer in downtown Houston. The center will occupy the first floor and upper mezzanine of the Episcopal Health Foundation’s building at 500 Fannin Street. It is scheduled to open in the fall of 2015.
Hines, once the rector of Christ Church (1941-45), became the Bishop of Texas (1955-64) and the Episcopal Church’s 22nd presiding bishop (1965-74).
“The Hines Center will offer physical practices that support spiritual growth and appeal to a large cross-section of individuals coming from a broad spectrum of Christian faith,” says a report on the cathedral’s website. “Such physical practices will include a labyrinth, sacred movement, yoga, and more.”
The center also will offer programs in contemplative prayer, meditative visual art and icon writing, one-on-one spiritual direction, interfaith lectures, and film studies.
“The Hines Center will be an aesthetically and functionally beautiful space,” said Wayne Clawater, chairman of the cathedral’s spiritual center task force, in the report. “The boundless level of enthusiasm, sense of purpose, and dedication of everyone who has been involved in the Center’s development has been inspirational in its own right, and is reflective of the Hines Center’s awesome potential. The Hines Center will be a wonderful legacy of the Cathedral and yet another example of how God is in the midst of the city.”
