The Most Rev. Desmond Tutu, 84, former Archbishop of Cape Town and key figure in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, recently returned to a hospital in Johannesburg because of a stubborn surgical wound.

“Thank you all you tweeters and facebookers for the love and prayers for my good health,” Tutu wrote on Twitter Sept. 19. “Love is the best medicine. God bless you all!”

The Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation provided more clarity via Facebook. “I am happy to report that I just spoke with Rev. Mpho Tutu van Furth, the Archbishop’s daughter, and he continues his recovery from surgery and is doing quite well,” said Brian Rusch, executive director. “Any reports that you see to the contrary are false. He is alive and doing better every day! Thank you for your continued prayers.”

According to CNN, Tutu’s family revealed on Sept. 17 that he returned to the hospital after developing an infected surgical wound.
