Meeting the (Fifth) Mark

Thirty-two ministries across the Episcopal Church will soon receive more than $1 million in grants for ministries satisfying the fifth mark of mission, “To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.”

Executive Council announced the grant winners during its spring meeting in Chaska, Minnesota. The winning missions and ministries focus especially on refugee and environmental issues.

The 2016 grants, totaling $1,161,314.62, were awarded to 25 dioceses located in the United States, five non-domestic dioceses, and six companion dioceses. UTO also awarded one grant to Episcopal Migration Ministries and one Presiding Bishop Grant.

Grants included:

  • Office of the Presiding Bishop/Episcopal Migration Ministries/United Thank Offering Challenge Grant — New Resettlement Sites and Refugee Mental Health: $89,054.20
  • Presiding Bishop Grant — Dioceses of Rumonge, Matana, Gitega, and Muyinga, Province of Burundi, Land and Water Conservation to Sustain Food Security: $98,000
  • Diocese of Alabama — Camp McDowell Recycling Center, Camp McDowell, Nauvoo: $67,120
  • Diocese of California — Greening All Saints, All Saints Church, San Leandro: $56,000
  • Diocese of Central Gulf Coast — St. James’ Episcopal Church Youth Water Ministry, St. James’ Episcopal Church, Eufaula, Alabama: $17,900
  • China Province of Guizhou — Sewage Ditch and Sewage Disposal Tank Construction Project in Sandu Shui Ethnic Autonomous County, China Christian Council, Sandu Shui Ethnic Autonomous County, Guizhou Province, China: $66,620
  • Diocese of Colorado with the Companion Diocese of Haiti — Creating Opportunities for Eco-Friendly and Healthy Livelihoods in Haiti, St. Paul’s School, Petit Trou de Nippes: $64,000
