New ACNA Bishop in Pittsburgh

Ian Mikrut/Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh

The Rt. Rev. James Hobby has been consecrated as successor to the Rt. Rev. Robert Duncan as bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Pittsburgh.

The Sept. 10 service at St. Paul Cathedral marked an important transition for the diocese and the Anglican Church in North America. Duncan led the diocese through its departure from Episcopal Church membership and became the ACNA’s founding archbishop.

The Most Rev. Foley Beach, second archbishop of the ACNA, presided over the service.

The diocese elected Hobby from a slate of six in April. He was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in 1986 and transferred to the Church of Uganda in 2005 and then to the Anglican Church in North America in 2009.

Hobby most recently served as rector of Trinity Anglican Church in Thomasville, Georgia. In the last two decades, he has served at St. Peter’s Anglican Church and St. John’s Episcopal Church, both in Tallahassee, and as the Gulf Atlantic Diocese’s canon for congregational development.

“I am more of a builder than war-time leader,” hobby wrote in a profile during Pittsburgh diocese’s search. “My entire focus since leaving the Episcopal Church has been to lead clergy and congregations into thinking like missionaries.”

The bishop is married to the Rev. Shari Elliott Hobby, also an Anglican priest, and they have three daughters.
