The bishops of South Carolina have extended an unusual invitation for other bishops to join them on June 11 at a hotel near the Atlanta airport for continued conversation about proposed General Convention legislation on sexuality which according to Bishop Edward L. Salmon, Jr., was unresolved when the spring meeting of the House of Bishops adjourned early due to the start of the war with Iraq.
“We are deeply divided on an issue which will only be resolved in the Lord’s time,” the invitation letter said. “There are some of us who will not be able to accept any legislation which would approve a behavior which we find contrary to our interpretation of Holy Scripture and to the historical position of the church universal.
"The question that we need to consider is how can we, who differ so deeply with the theological positions of the church, live out our faith as Episcopalians and part of our Anglican Communion? How can we help our church live its life within the existing tension and not seek the legislative answer to pastoral issues?”
