The Rev. Sandy Millar, the former rector of Holy Trinity Church Brompton in London—the home of the Alpha course—will be consecrated a “bishop in mission” for service in England on Nov. 27 by Archbishop Henry Orombi of Uganda.
Unlike the recent extension of Ugandan oversight to parishes in Los Angeles and Florida that have seceded from the Episcopal Church, the simultaneous announcements from London and Kampala on Oct. 21 state that the new bishop “will be licensed to act” in London with the permission of the Church of England.
How he will act, and what jurisdiction he will exercise, was not disclosed by either Church. But both are agreed that the “Alpha” bishop will not be a “flying bishop” for evangelicals. It would be wrong to assume he “might become a standard bearer for Church of England dissidents,” said the Rt. Rev. Richard Chartres, Bishop of London.
