The Most Rev. Frank T. Griswold, Presiding Bishop, preached and co-celebrated with the Rt. Rev. Carolyn Tanner Irish, Bishop of Utah, at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Salt Lake City at the start of the Episcopal Communicators annual meeting April 27.
In an interview with the Salt Lake City Tribune, the Presiding Bishop said that he wants to spend his time in office combating poverty, disease and hunger; meanwhile, he must address sexuality issues. He also said the rending underway in the Anglican Communion over sexuality is being fueled by "certain right-wing forces" within the Episcopal Church.
The Deseret Morning News, another Salt Lake City daily newspaper, reported that Bishop Griswold compared the current furor over sexuality to the apostolic Church controversy about welcoming uncircumcised Gentiles in the Church. Episcopalians are so divided, Bishop Griswold said, because "everyone is so thoroughly defended (in their own position), instead of dealing with one another from the heart."
