Before a specific situation occurs, the Bishop of New York clarified his policy on permission for a priest under his oversight to continue in the same position after that person has reached the mandatory retirement age of 72.

Among the less-noted actions of the 74th General Convention was an amendment of the canon pertaining to priests who have reached mandatory retirement. Previously after retirement, the priest could serve any position except the one from which he or she retired. The amended canon removes the restriction against continuing to serve at the same position. Annual permission of the bishop and standing committee is still required.

“It is my view that the policy for work after the mandatory retirement age of 72 for priests and bishops is a good policy. Further, a move from the position they have held is also a good thing,” the Rt. Rev. Mark S. Sisk said. “If there are exceptions, they will be extremely rare and will be made only for sharply clear and convincing reasons of missionary strategy for that particular congregation.”
