Clergy from seven congregations in the Diocese of Florida have requested alternative episcopal oversight from their bishop, the Rt. Rev. John Howard.
The clergy were planning to meet with Bishop Howard Friday afternoon in hopes that he would agree to provide another bishop to minister in those churches. In a letter signed by the seven priests, they point out that they differ with Bishop Howard because the Diocese of Florida continues to send funds to support the programs of the national Episcopal Church, and because Bishop Howard continues to participate in eucharistic fellowship with members of the House of Bishops, particularly Bishop V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.
“…we ask that you grant to another bishop oversight over us which in addition to confirmation includes clergy discipline, employment and succession,” the letter stated. The signatories added that they wish to remain in the Anglican Communion and “continue our ministries in good conscience.”
The document was signed by the following: The Rev. Jim McCaslin, All Souls’ Church, Jacksonville; the Rev. Neil Lebhar, Redeemer, Jacksonville; the Rev. David Sandifer, Calvary, Jacksonville; the Rev. Samuel Pascoe, Grace, Orange Park; the Rev. C. Alexander Farmer, St. Michael’s, Gainesville; the Rev. James Needham, Community of Life, Tallahassee; and the Rev. Robert Sanders, Jacksonville Anglican Fellowship, a newly formed congregation.
