  • Anglican Communion Challenges Focus of Conference in Charleston, S.C.

    The inaugural “Mere Anglicanism” conference was held Jan. 19-21 at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul in Charleston, S.C. Approximately 250 gathered to hear Dr. Os Guinness deliver three talks on “Third Mission to the West: Opportunities and Challenges in Winning Back our Civilization,” and the Rev. Stephen Noll of Uganda Christian University speak on “Global Anglicanism: A Blueprint.” Both addresses were later discussed by panels of respected academicians, clergy, and active laity. The conference was dedicated to the memory of Diane Knippers, the late president of the Institute for Religion and Democracy.

  • Network Relief Agency Distributed $1.5 Million in 2005

    The Anglican Relief and Development Fund (ARDF), the outreach arm of the Anglican Communion Network, dispersed more than $1.5 million in grants for aid projects in partnership with Anglicans from a number of countries in the Global South during its first year of operation.

  • Pennsylvania Bishop 'Committed to Staying,' Won't Resign

    The Bishop of Pennsylvania, the Rt. Rev. Charles E. Bennison, Jr., has rejected a request from the standing committee, stating in an e-mail message to the clergy that he will not resign.

  • Standing Committee Asks Bishop Bennison to Resign

    By unanimous vote, the standing committee of the Diocese of Pennsylvania has asked its Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Charles E. Bennison, Jr., to retire or resign. Standing Committee member the Rev. Glen M. Matis, rector of the Church of the Resurrection in Philadelphia, told The Living Church "the actions of the Standing Committee involved judgments concerning trusts and the bishop's ability to lead the diocese now." The Standing Committee is expected to issue a formal statement shortly.

  • P.B. Nominees Announced

    Four bishops have been selected as nominees to succeed the Most Rev. Frank Griswold as Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The Joint Nominating Committee for the Election of the Presiding Bishop made the announcement Jan. 25.

  • Bishop Bane on His Decision to Resign

    The Rt. Rev. David C. Bane Jr., has been under increasing pressure to resign as Bishop of Southern Virginia. At a pre-council hearing Oct. 1, Bishop Bane announced his resignation effective at the conclusion of diocesan council next February. He spoke with The Living Church about his time as bishop and his opinion on the roots and nature of the conflict.
