  • Bishops Propose Primatial Vicar for Petitioning Dioceses

    A group of bishops, including Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, has developed a proposal responding to requests articulated in "An Appeal to the Archbishop of Canterbury" regarding an alternate primatial relationship for petitioning dioceses. The proposal has been submitted to the Archbishop of Canterbury and to the bishops of the petitioning dioceses.

  • Network Bishops Reject ‘Primatial Vicar’ Offer; Recommit to Mediated Solution

    Speaking on behalf of the Anglican Communion Network of which he is moderator, the Rt. Rev. Robert Duncan, Bishop of Pittsburgh, said he was heartened by the “primatial vicar” proposal that Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori announced earlier today and reiterated his commitment to find a mediated solution. Seven Network dioceses, including Pittsburgh, have requested alternate primatial oversight (APO).

    An online calendar designed by the Diocese of Washington in part to help parents teach their children about Advent becomes active Dec. 1. In addition to the calendar there are other Advent-related activities available at the site for children.

  • South Carolina Missionary Released Unharmed in Haiti

    A lay missionary from the Diocese of Upper South Carolina has been released unharmed after he and four nurses were kidnapped on Nov. 23 in Haiti.

  • Formal Complaint Filed Against Milwaukee Bishop

    A formal complaint also has been filed against the Rt. Rev. Steven A. Miller, Bishop of Milwaukee. The complainants allege that Bishop Miller mishandled the formal complaint against Ms. Englert and prejudiced the diocesan review committee against her.

  • Archbishop Williams, Pope Benedict Hold Vatican Talks

    The Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church will begin a new phase of ecumenism, one which “goes beyond theological dialogue,” according to a joint statement issued Nov. 23 after a formal audience by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams at the Vatican with Pope Benedict XVI.

    Five retired bishops are among the more than 140 Episcopalians who have signed an open letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury that urges him to reject all requests for alternative primatial oversight.

  • Chancellor: Episcopal Church Will Prevail in Communion and Courts

    Although The Episcopal Church currently finds itself in uncharted territory both legally over ownership of diocesan property and with respect to its standing within the Anglican Communion, the Presiding Bishop’s chancellor, David Booth Beers, does not anticipate that the Archbishop of Canterbury will make any formal change in the church’s membership status in the Communion nor does he expect any dioceses affiliated with the Anglican Communion Network to attempt to leave.

    At no time during his Nov. 3 workshop presentation to the Episcopal Majority did David Booth Beers, chancellor for the Presiding Bishop, suggest motives for hypothetical actions that Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams might make with regard to the future status of The Episcopal Church within the Anglican Communion, nor did he list possible Communion-funding sources or mention the Compass Rose Society by name.
