The Rev. Mark M. Beckwith, rector of All Saints, Worcester, Mass., was elected bishop of Newark on the third ballot during a special convention in the see city Sept. 23.

To be elected, a candidate required a simple majority in both the clergy and lay orders. Fr. Beckwith received 87 clergy votes and 166 lay votes. The results were announced shortly before noon local time.

Fr. Beckwith was one of six nominees. The other candidates were: the Rev. Canon Michael Lee Barlowe, officer for congregational development, Diocese of California; the Rt. Rev. Carol Joy Gallagher, assistant Bishop of Newark; the Rev. William A. Potter, rector, St. Luke’s, Hope, N.J.; the Very Rev. Petero Sabune, pastor and chaplain, Sing Sing Correctional Facility and associate at Trinity Church, Ossining, N.Y.; and the Rev. William “Chip” Stokes, rector, St. Paul’s, Delray Beach, Fla.

The election occurred at the Robert Treat Hotel in downtown Newark, a short walk from Trinity and St. Philip’s Cathedral where the electing convention began with Holy Eucharist.
