Executive Council and most of the so-called interim committees, commissions and boards (which facilitate the work of General Convention when it is not in session) recently announced the date and location for their first meeting since the June 21 conclusion of the 75th General Convention.
Executive Council, which oversees the program budget of the General Convention, is scheduled to hold its first session of the new triennium Nov. 12-15 at a hotel and convention center in Chicago. The first meeting of many of the committees, commissions and boards will be Nov. 15-18 at the same location.
The interim bodies (so called because they meet between sessions of General Convention) perform a variety of functions within The Episcopal Church. Their responsibilities include helping implement legislation approved at the previous convention and preparing draft legislation for the next convention. The importance of many of these groups is expected to increase this triennium. A shorter legislative calendar as well as extended debate and procedural motions pertaining to the Windsor Report created a larger-than-usual amount of uncompleted legislation when the General Convention adjourned. Resolution D098 encourages the secretary of convention to exercise discretion in referring convention resolutions that were not finalized “to an appropriate interim body.”
As of Aug. 30, the following interim bodies were scheduled to participate in the Chicago meeting:
House of Deputies Committee on the State of the Church
House of Bishops Committee on Pastoral Development
Joint Standing Committee on Nominations
Joint Standing Committee on Program, Budget and Finance
(officers only)
