Two additional candidates have been added by petition to the slate of nominees for the March 10 election of a bishop suffragan in the Diocese of Connecticut.
The candidates are: the Rev. Barbara Cheney, rector of the Church of St. Paul and St. James in New Haven, Conn.; and the Rev. José A. Díaz-Martínez, diocesan Hispanic missioner overseeing Iglesia Betania, Norwalk, and San Lucas and San Pablo, Bridgeport. Nominations are now closed. The final slate contains seven candidates.
The Diocese of Connecticut is led by the Rt. Rev. Andrew D. Smith. In recent years two bishops suffragan have assisted with episcopal visitations and administration. The Rt. Rev. James E. Curry was consecrated in 2000. The second suffragan position became available when the Rt. Rev. Wilfrido Ramos-Orench accepted a call to serve as missionary Bishop of the Diocese of Ecuador Central.
The consecration of the new bishop suffragan is scheduled for June 30 pending consent from a majority of bishops and standing committees from the other 109 dioceses of The Episcopal Church.
