Archbishop Emmanuel Kolini was re-elected to another three-year term as Primate of the Anglican Church of Rwanda during that church’s General Synod late last year at St. Etienne’s Cathedral in Biryogo.
Delegates to the General Synod also voted to broaden and increase the curriculum of the church’s theological college in Kabunga. The changes are intended to transform the theological college into an academic university offering new degrees in a variety of secular subjects. Synod also voted to change the legal name of the church from the Episcopal Church of Rwanda to the Anglican Church of Rwanda.
Shortly after his re-election as primate, Archbishop Kolini called for reform of Rwanda’s educational system during a sermon delivered at St. Etienne’s Cathedral, as reported by Religious Intelligence. Archbishop Kolini asserted that prior to the outbreak of violence in 1994, the media and state schools helped indoctrinate the Hutu majority of the population with a genocidal ideology. Teachers “have to be taught not to shy away from speaking the dangerous effects of this ideology,” he said, adding that security and salvation come not through armed might, but through faith in Jesus Christ.
