The Rt. Rev. Victoria Matthews, former Bishop of Edmonton in the Anglican Church of Canada, was elected Bishop of Christchurch in the Anglican Province of Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. A special election was held Feb. 15-17.

Bishop Matthews, 53, resigned as Bishop of Edmonton last November. She was twice nominated as primate of Canada. In 2004, she withdrew as a nominee after being diagnosed with breast cancer. After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy sessions, she returned to her leadership role after seven months of medical leave. At the July 2007 General Synod, she finished second in voting.
