The appointment was announced April 25 by Archbishop Philip Freier of Melbourne. Canon Darling, 60, was among the first women in Australia to be ordained priest in 1992. She was elected as a canon of St. Paul’s Cathedral in 1995, and appointed as an examining chaplain in 1998. She is now vicar of St. James’, Dandenong.
The appointment of Canon Darling was preceded this month by the appointment of Archdeacon Kay Goldsworthy as an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Perth. She is scheduled to be consecrated May 22.
