Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori said Jan. 29 that The Episcopal Church would prepare an advocacy response to the latest humanitarian atrocities being committed in the Sudan.

“For more than 22 years, the Lord’s Resistance Army, a Ugandan rebel group, has terrorized people in the region,” she said. “This month’s LRA attacks on Episcopalians and others in the Sudan…are the latest signal to the world that stronger international action is necessary in order to stop the LRA’s reign of violence in the region and to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Bishop Jefferts Schori said she has asked the Rt. Rev. Francis Gray, former Bishop of Northern Indiana, and the Rt. Rev. David C. Jones, Bishop suffragan of Virginia, to brief her staff upon their return from the Sudan next month. The two bishops are part of a delegation of Episcopalians from the dioceses of Virginia, Chicago and El Camino Real who will be traveling to meet with Anglican leaders in the Sudan beginning next week.

In the meantime, Bishop Jefferts Schori encouraged Episcopalians to raise community awareness about the crisis, lobby President Obama for support, contribute to the work of Episcopal Relief and Development, and pray for the people of central and eastern Africa.

“The Anglican churches in Africa are deeply prayerful communities and I know the degree to which they treasure the solidarity of our prayers together,” she said.
