The Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith, Bishop of Newark, N.J., has invited the people of his diocese to participate in an online book discussion during the season of Advent. The discussion begins Nov. 29 and concludes Dec. 23.

The bishop and his readers will discuss Sister Joan Chittister’s Wisdom Distilled from the Daily: Living the Rule of St. Benedict Today (HarperOne).

“I would like to invite you to join with me in a shared discipline this Advent season, as together we engage in the deep mysteries of our faith as we prepare for the coming one,” Bishop Beckwith wrote on his weblog, For Gates of Hope. “What I will be doing is responding to her book on my blog on a regular basis and invite you to write your responses to Joan Chittister, to me, or to whatever God is writing on your soul. And that way we can deepen our community with one another, our relationship with God, and endeavor to create a community of practice with one another.”

Bishop Beckwith was consecrated in January 2007. Before his election, he was rector of All Saints Church in downtown Worcester, Mass., for 13 years.
