A vigil held June 1 at Boston’s St. Paul’s Cathedral in memory of slain abortion doctor George Tiller was not only an opportunity to grieve his death and celebrate his life; it was also a huge evangelism opportunity, according to the Rev. Katherine Ragsdale, president and dean-elect of Episcopal Divinity School.
Dean Ragsdale, who led the service of prayers and hymns, told The Living Church most of the 400-500 persons who attended the vigil at the cathedral were probably not regular church goers. During the service a number of letters were read from women who Dean Ragsdale said had been helped by Dr. Tiller, who she described as “a martyr.”
“He gave his life in the service of others,” Dean Ragsdale said. “He did work that was demanding and dangerous and not nearly as lucrative as other fields he could have pursued, and he did this under constant unremitting harassment and terrorism for decades.”
Dean Ragsdale noted that the clinic where Dr. Tiller worked was destroyed in a bombing in 1985 and he had been shot in both arms in 1993 in an attempt to prevent him from performing future abortions.
In remarks during the vigil at the cathedral, Dean Ragsdale called Dr. Tiller “a saint” whose work was consistent with the teachings of The Episcopal Church.
“What is a saint except someone who gives his life to care for others in the service of God,” she said. “He was a deeply spiritual, prayerful man.”

The murder of Dr. Tiller was absolutely wrong, but Dr. Tiller was no saint. He was a man who made a lucrative business out of late term abortions. Late term abortions are no different than killing premature babies. The fact that the Episcopal Church would raise this man to a place of honor is horrific. That the Episcopal Church supports the murder of unborn babies is just another symptom of its moral decay. The murder of Dr. Tiller was inexcusable, and Dr. Tiller was no saint.
Dr. Tiller's work was clearly controversial, but I have been deeply dismayed by the statements made by some of his opponents following his death.
To implicitly approve of killing abortion providers, condemn him and what he did, and to pass judgment on his soul seem more than contrary to Jesus' Gospel, even if one disagreed with Dr. Tiller's approach to the practice of medicine.
The lack of compassion for those who mourn seems to indicate a lack of familiarity with the Bible, especially the New Testament, with Jesus' messages of love and forgiveness for all.
Are pro-life conservatives reading the same Bible that I am? Some times I wonder...
You have got to be kidding. That man ended the life of over 60,000 babies during his career, and he's being honored as a "saint"? Dean Ragsdale should be completley ashamed of herself.
I do NOT condone the killing of Dr. George Tiller. It was an evil act.
However, [the children] are the real martyrs. The mothers are also victims.

There is a great risk in assuming that a particular medical procedure is always good or evil. What about the many women whose lives were lost when they died from illegal "back alley" abortions? What about the mothers who died in childbirth because they felt compelled to continue with a high-risk pregnancy? Did their lives have no value compared to an unborn child?
The life of a potential mother must be at least as valuable in God's sight as the value of an unborn child if all life is indeed precious. It is not a sign of "moral decay" to carefully weigh complex issues in thoughtful ways, nor to be willing to choose between shades of gray when there is no obvious "black versus white" choice.
Compassion is at least as important as moral absolutism in making decisions such as whether to continue a pregnancy: "love one another as I have loved you."
Please DO NOT lump all people who are Pro-Life in with those who condone the shooting of Dr. Tiller. His murder can NOT be condoned. His shooting was an act of evil perpetrated.
Having said that, one need only visit the website, "Priests for Life" to see the results of later term abortions. Earlier, I stated that the mother is also a victim. This is very true - having an abortion is not like having your appendix or tonsils taken out.
When, in the name of Jesus did KILLING BABIES make an IDIOT a SAINT????
Did they leave the ten commandments out of the Rev. Ragsdales bible? Does she own one? Has she ever read it?
Please inform the ignorant liberal clergy, the Ten Commandments are listed in Exodis, Chapter 20. "Thou shall not kill" is number 6 on the list.
Murderers ain't saints and saints ain't murderers.
If Dr. Killakid is a saint then so is the dummy that shot him.
The message I'm getting from The Very Liberal Katherine Ragsdale is in today's world, "two wrongs DO make a right!" Not in my lifetime!!!!!!!
