On the last day of the General Convention, eight cyclists from the Diocese of Ohio will ride from Anaheim to the Episcopal Church Center in New York City. The Rt. Rev. Mark Hollingsworth, Jr., Bishop of Ohio, and seven other cyclists will ride around the clock in a relay format, hoping to complete the journey in eight to 10 days. Bishop Hollingsworth said the group’s goal is to raise at least $100,000 for Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) from dioceses and communicants across The Episcopal Church, which will be designated for malaria control and prevention.

The cross-country ride is the culmination of several Bishop’s Bike Rides organized by Bishop Hollingsworth. The rides began with a 145-mile ride home to Cleveland from the 75th General Convention held in Columbus in 2006.

Bishop Hollingsworth has a long history of distance-bike riding for various causes. Other riders will include Carl Peterson, a recent graduate of Hudson (Ohio) High School, and Greg Daniels, a consultant for IBM, both members of Christ Church, Hudson; the Rev. Kelly O’Connell, rector, St. Mark’s, Toledo, and the route planner and training advisor; the Rev. Stephen R. Sedgwick, rector, Redeemer, Lorain; the Rev. Daniel Orr, priest-in-charge of St. Paul’s, Freemont; Isaac Hollingsworth, the bishop’s son and a sophomore at St. Paul’s School, Concord, N.H.; and Michael Obel-Omia, former head of the Upper School at University School in Cleveland and a parishioner at St. Paul’s, Cleveland Heights.
