General Convention’s Committee on World Mission spent nearly 90 minutes Saturday morning revising a resolution that, while using polite language about preserving the unity of the Anglican Communion, ultimately repeals Resolution B033.

The amended form of Resolution D025 says the 76th General Convention acknowledges that God may call gays and lesbians, “like any other baptized members, to any ordained ministry in The Episcopal Church.”

This language is in contrast to Resolution B033’s call that the church observe a season of restraint on consecrating bishops “whose manner of life presents a challenge to the wider church and will lead to further strains on communion.”

Nearly all deputies on the committee approved the resolution. Bishops on the committee rejected it on a vote of 2 to 3.

The Rev. Gay Jennings, committee co-chair, said the resolution proceeds to the House of Deputies. If the resolution passes in that house, she said, the bishop on the committee may recommend that the House of Bishops not concur with the House of Deputies.
