In contrast with three years ago, when three candidates announced their intention to stand for election as vice president of the House of Deputies of General Convention, no one has made a similar announcement even though the triennial event opens next week in Anaheim, Calif.
The Rev. Gregory S. Straub, executive officer and secretary of the General Convention, said nominations for both offices will be made from the floor of the House of Deputies with the office of president to be filled during the afternoon session July 9 and the vice presidency to be filled during the morning session on July 11.
By canon the vice president must come from the clergy order if the president is a member of the laity and vice versa. Voting is by orders. The responsibilities of the president include presiding during legislative sessions of the House of Deputies and the appointment of lay and clergy to the committees, commissions, agencies and organizations overseen by convention. “No person elected president or vice president shall be eligible for more than three consecutive full terms in each respective office,” the canon states.
Both current office holders were elected to their first term during the 75th General Convention in 2006. Bonnie Anderson ran unopposed for president and the Rev. Brian Prior, rector of Church of the Resurrection, Spokane Valley, Wash., was elected vice president.
