Alexandria School of Theology has announced that the Very Rev. Canon Samy Fawzy Shehata, dean of St. Mark’s Pro-Cathedral in Alexandria, is its new principal. The dean holds a diploma in theology from the University of Wales, and both a master’s of arts in mission studies and a doctorate in theology from the University of Birmingham.

In June AST held its sixth graduation service at All Saints Cathedral in Cairo. The Most Rev. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, was the commencement speaker.

The Most Rev. Mouneer Hanna Anis, Bishop of the Diocese of Egypt with North Africa and the Horn of Africa and Primate of the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East, has announced that he will install the Rev. Toby Howarth as an honorary canon of All Saints Cathedral during the cathedral’s 75th anniversary celebration in November.

This appointment recognizes the work of Howarth (Archbishop Welby’s Secretary for Inter-Religious Affairs) for dialogue between Anglicans and Al Azhar Al Sharif, the hub of Sunni Islam throughout the world, in Cairo. Howarth has visited Egypt and various parts of the Middle East many times, and previously taught Islamic studies at Crowther Hall when he was its vice principal.
