Virginia Honors Jonathan Daniels

The Rt. Rev. Shannon Johnston, writes to the clergy of his diocese:

Jonathan has a personal connection with our Commonwealth of Virginia, graduating from Virginia Military Institute (VMI), which has remembered him by naming a very prominent entrance arch in his honor (others being so honored include George Washington and George C. Marshall). VMI also created the Jonathan M. Daniels Humanitarian Award, first granted to former president Jimmy Carter and this year to Congressman John Lewis. The other two Virginia dioceses, Southern Virginia and Southwestern Virginia, are also designating a Sunday to honor Jonathan.

I am myself very personally familiar with his larger story, knowing courageous people in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma, Ala. (the first congregation I served as a priest), who hosted and facilitated Jonathan’s activities for the Civil Rights Movement.
