Virginia Theological Seminary has published the latest book by the Rt. Rev. C. Andrew Doyle, ninth Bishop of Texas. Doyle is a 1995 alumnus of the seminary.

Church: A Generous Community Amplified for the Future is a companion to A Generous Community: Being the Church in a New Missionary Age, which Church Publishing has scheduled for October.

“This is a substantial text from a gifted bishop,” said the Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, dean and president of VTS. “It is a remarkable study of trends and possibilities in the Church. From the desk of an academic, this would be remarkable; from the desk of a busy bishop responsible for a large and complex diocese, it is extraordinary. This is book that is worthy of study and application. It sets a new agenda for the next decade of the Episcopal Church.”

“My hope is that this text will offer leaven to feed the Church’s imagination,” Doyle said. “It is an offering to God and the Church. It is an offering to all those who have lost hope in their church over the last two decades. Most of all, it is an offering for those who deeply desire to be part of what God is doing in the world around us. It is you, the imaginative lover of Jesus, passionate missionary, and worldly pilgrim, whom I hope to engage in a discussion about the future.”

Will Willimon, a retired United Methodist bishop and a Duke Divinity School professor of the practice of Christian ministry, is among the authors endorsing the book.

“Andrew Doyle dearly loves his church and longs for it to have a vibrant future,” Willimon writes. “His book is a wide-ranging, well-informed, and above all loving and enthusiastic invitation for Episcopalian Christians to walk confidently into God’s future. Drawing upon his extensive church experience, as well as his vast reading, Doyle gives us an informed, critical but always hopeful, positive push forward. He shows the church how to be more faithful and vital.”
